Super Absorbent Polymers

 

Super Absorbent Polymers - 3 Types:

Slurry Solidify - Super Absorbent Polymer.Super Absorbent Polymers (SAP) are used to solidify a wide variety of aqueous waste waters and sludge.  The advantage of these water-swelling super absorbent polymers (compared to traditional absorbents such as clay and sawdust) is they absorb many times their weight with a nominal or negligible increase in volume or weight.

When liquid waste is solidified with Slurry Solidify the solidified waste expands in weight and volume by less than 1%.  For example, a 55 gallon drum of slurry that is solidified with Slurry Solidify will expand (in weight and volume) by less than 1%.  In other words, what you get what you saw - you'll be handling the same weight and volume.  Likewise, transportation and landfill cost (to transport and dispose of the solidified waste) will not doubled and even tripled compared to the solidification process (swelling) of any other type of absorbent.

All super absorbent polymers are not the same.  Liquid waste streams vary in chemical composition, salinity, temperature, ph, etc.  To rapidly solidify liquids (while minimizing volume and weight), specific SAP formulations should be matched to the corresponding liquid waste.

SAP's are formulated for specific waste streams. Super absorbent polymer grades vary by mineral, content and crystal size.  Compared to suppliers of one SAP to another, we are able to easily match the SAP formulation to specific needs.  By doing this, we continually provide higher super absorbent polymers while minimizing cost to our customers.

Slurry Solidify is formulated to handle 3 specific types of liquid waste or slurry.  Click on the following to learn more about each of the absorbents.

 

 

 

 The 3 Types of Slurry Solidify - Formulas  -  Pricing & Ordering.

 

  1. "Solidified" Wastewater with Slurry Solidify - Water.Fresh Water Super AbsorbentSlurry Solidify - Water - A Premium SAP.  Recommended to use when the liquid waste contains at least 80% fresh waster, such as Concrete Slurry.

    As with any product, there are economical and premium grade products.  A premium grade SAP will use considerably less product to solidify a liquid.  In contrast, an economical grade SAP will use considerably more to solidify the same volume.

    Vacuuming Concrete Slurry.With the volume of sales,  Slurry Solidify - Water is sold at pricing that is comparable to the economy of that of vendors.

    Economic Advantage of Using a Premium Grade SAP:   A premium SAP has a larger granular size which is one of the reason why they can absorbent over 500 times vs. an Economic SAP.  Additionally, the heavier granular prevents it from being carried away by air when it is being poured into the slurry.


  2. "Solidified" Wastewater with Slurry Synergy and/or Oil.Combination - A Catch-All AbsorbentSlurry Solidify - Synergy.  A "one-inventory" absorbent to use solidify liquid waste - regardless of the content in the waste stream.

    Used when the waste stream contains a mixture of fresh water, salt water and oils.  A local application here in Pittsburgh, PA is gas drilling;  where their drill cuttings have a wide mixture of everything in it:  water, salt water, hydraulic fluid, petroleum, etc. 

    Additionally, the Synergy product is safe to walk on - it solidifies to an earth friendly grit (i.e. it is not slippery)
    .



  3. High Salt Content Absorbent:  HSALT - 100% Super Absorbent Polymer.  The percentage of salt in any slurry will always be a solidification concern.  The above Synergy product will handle a wide mix of ingredients that may be in the slurry.  However, when the salt content exceeds 3% (3 pounds per gallon), it will not solidify the liquid waste.  As a reference, dissolved salt in seawater is roughly 3.5% of the water's weight (35 pounds salt per 1000 pounds of water.)  On the average, seawater weighs 8.6 lbs (4 ounces of salt).

    HSALT is a true 100% Super Absorbent Polymer specifically designed to absorb brine waste streams, but it too has its limitation:  If the salt content exceeds 7% it will not solidify the brine solution.

Specific Solidification - for your specific type of liquid waste.  Super Absorbent Polymers (SAP) solidify liquid waste streams, dredge sediments, biosolids [ treated sewage sludge (organics) that is EPA approved for fertilizer or land disposal ], and sludges associated with remediation projects, landfill closures, petrochemical spills, and other environmental cleanup projects.  SAPs reduce waste transportation and disposal costs from these operations by solidifying liquid waste while minimizing an increase in weight and volume.  

Super absorbent polymers have numerous advantages over commonly used absorbents like kiln dust, Portland cement or sawdust.  Advantages include:

  • Chemically bonds to the liquid

  • Is not biodegrade

  • Does it release its absorbed molecules

  • Minimize waste volume – typical expansion is less than 1%

  • Mixes quickly to improve production efficiency

  • Pass the EPA Test Method 9095 paint filter test.  After solidification, many waste streams pass EPA Test Method 1311 for RCRA metals.

  • Solidified liquid waste is approved for landfill use.

What is a Super Absorbent Polymer?  Super absorbent polymer crystals are liquid absorbing crystals or slush powder, they have numerous practical applications.  Diaper manufacturers use super absorbent polymers as the solidification medium in the products.  Hospitals utilize them to solidify and dispose of bio-hazardous waste in suction canisters.  Energy companies utilize them to solidify the liquid waste byproducts of oil and gas drilling, and mining.  Wherever industry has a need to solidify a liquid waste stream – whether for manufacturing, maintenance or environmental cleanup – you will find super absorbent polymers at work.

The unique characteristics of a Super Absorbent Polymers, besides their ability to absorb the highest volume of water or organic fluids, is their ability to resist biodegradation and retain their absorbed liquid under pressure;  all of which makes a super absorbent polymer ideal for waste disposal in landfills.

Super Absorbent Polymers Compared to Other Solidification Media.  Compared to common sorbents, super absorbent polymers reduce waste transportation and disposal costs and they allow a wide range of solidified liquid waste streams to be disposed of in landfills.  For some applications, super absorbent polymers can be mixed with organic sorbents, like sawdust, to create a hybrid liquid waste solidification media.

How Are Super Absorbent Polymers Used?  Super absorbent polymers require no special preparation for use.  For most effective and efficient use in solidifying bulk waste streams, follow these instructions:

  • Perform a quick treat ability assessment to determine the optimum dose rate.

  • Apply the required quantity from a super sack or 50 pound bag.

  • Add the SAP to the waste stream and mechanically mix with a shovel, backhoe or trackhoe.

Super Absorbent Polymer Safety.  Super absorbent polymer crystals are non-toxic and non-hazardous (when mixed with fresh clean water you can eat it).  Independent tests confirm that super absorbent polymers are safe to use.

 

 

Slurry Solidify Premium - Water.  For use with Liquid Waste containing at least 80% Fresh Water.

A solid, granular Superabsorbent Polymer (SAP) that will absorb liquid waste up to 500 times its granular weight.  Slurry Solidify is a premium grade 100% SAP as opposed other absorbent products that may be a mix of absorbents or their granular size is significantly finer.  The sole advantage of a Premium SAP is you'll use considerably less product to absorb significantly more liquid.

Recommended Applications:  Concrete slurry or any other fresh water based waste when the oil, salt or acid content does not exceed 20%.

  • All ingredients natural, organic, non-toxic, non-leaching, easy to use, and confirms to (40 CFR 264.314 (e) (ii)) as Non-Biodegradable.

  • When used properly there will be No Free Liquids - will pass the Paint Filter Test (EPA 9095).

  • Solidifies slurry waste to a gel consistency.  If you want the waste to be a complete solid - simply add more product.

  • Minimal Expansion - Absorbs fast, expands in weight & volume by < 1%.  When you consider freight & disposal cost of transporting the absorbed waste, Slurry Solidify will always be your lowest cost solution. 

  • Best results are obtained when the fresh water based slurry has a pH rating that is close to neutral (Slurry Solidify - Water is not recommended for use with salt water)

  • Before mixing Slurry Solidify with your liquid waste, it is best to check the pH of the slurry (using litmus paper or a pH test kit).  If the pH reading is higher than 10, a safe acid such as a toilet bowl cleaner or a splash of muratic acid will quickly lower the pH.

  • The liquids and particles in the absorbed slurry are "chemically" absorbed into the polymer granular.  The substances are literally sucked into, retained and held - they are not released

  • Slurry Solidify - Water is a 100% SAP Premium Polymer - "Use it sparingly".  The more you use the harder or the more solid the liquid waste will become.  Because is it a Premium Polymer, considerably less product will be needed to absorb the liquid waste than any other type of absorbent, including "fine" polymers, special blends (a mix of absorbent type ingredients), natural (clay) or agricultural (corn cob).

  • Encapsulates (retains and protects) even debris particles of Low Level Radioactive Waste (LLW)

  • Versatile & unlimited range:  Absorbs all types of water based waste on contact, including:  animal waste, vegetable, mineral, chemical, drugs, LLW, metals, etc.

  • Solidifies any fresh water-based liquid of any viscosity, from 100% liquid to heavy sludge ~ rubbing alcohol to peanut butter viscosity

  • Unlimited uses as an absorbent that is safe to use in all applications:  Injurious to soil, cement, asphalt, tile, plants, animals, humans, drugs, etc.

  • If the waste stream contains less than 20% oil, acid or salt, Slurry Solidify - Water will always be the recommended and most cost effective absorbent to use;  the cost savings include absorption ratios, disposal and freight cost.

  • The warmer the water temperature and outside air, the faster Slurry Solidify Water will work.  In colder temperatures, it may take 24 hours until the liquid waste is solidified.

COST STUDY #1 - Using Slurry Solidify Water, to stabilize and transport sludge <.pdf download >  from a waste lagoon at a manufacturing plant.  The waste was very wet and contained heavy metals and diesel fuel.  Using Slurry Solidify Water solidification times, transportation and disposal cost were all dramatically cut.

 


COST STUDY #2 - Slurry Solidify Water being used in a very cold climate.

  • 3 cups of Slurry Solidify Water were mixed with 30 gallons of concrete slurry

  • The project was in Minnesota, during the month of October

  • After 30 minutes and no signs of thickening, 3 more cups were added

  • After another 30 minutes, 3 more cups were added . . . and so on . . . 

  • Eventually, a total of 16 cups were added

  • The following morning, the contractor had a solid rubber brick in the drum.

  • Case in point:  The wet waste will harden as the temperatures warm.  In colder conditions, it simply take a little longer but to solidify but . . . adding more absorbent is not necessary.

Slurry Solidify - Synergy.  A one-inventory item to solidify liquid waste containing mixtures of everything.Slurry Solidify - Synergy.  For use when the slurry is a combination of everything . . . oils, fresh and salt water, not neutral on the pH scale.

Recommended Applications:  Drill Mud - Or any other mixture of goop or sludge . . .  Natural gas and or oil drilling operations are good examples of larger waste steams that have diverse effects on our environment.  From simple water-based cuttings to mixtures of salt, oil and diesel fluids.  These blended waste streams are typically absorbed with saw dust and corn cob based minerals.

As a cost effective alternative, Slurry Solidify Synergy will handle these mixtures.  FACTS:

  1. When the fresh water content does NOT exceed 50% or when the waste stream is NOT close to neutral on the pH scale, Slurry Solidify Synergy is the "catch-all" absorbent to use.

  2. If the water content in the waste stream is 70% (maybe even 60%), do not underestimate the ability of our #1 selling SAP:  Slurry Solidify Premium - Water.

The General Rule is:  5% of the Weight.  A few examples are as follows:

  • 100 tons of drill cuttings requires 5 tons of Slurry Solidify - Synergy

  • 50 tons of drill cuttings requires 2.5 tons of Slurry Solidify - Synergy

  • 5 gallon bucket of sludge (consisting of petroleum, water and muck) that weighs 60 pounds requires 2.5 pounds of Slurry Solidify - Synergy.

HSALT.  Absorbent for brine waste streams when the salt content does not exceed 7% (7 pounds per gallon).

Additional Applications:  Very effective lubricant or shale inhibitor during earth drilling operations.  Improves the drilling fluid's ability (typically a salt water solution) to remove cuttings from the wellbore.  A blend of super absorbent polymers provides the best combination of properties for absorption and dissolubility.

Solidified & Non-Solidified Drill Mud.Treated Mud Solidification - Problem:
The process of drilling through the earth typically exceeds 100's of thousands of gallons of drill mud.  The liquid waste typically consists of a brine solution.

Solution:
To optimize disposal costs, reducing transportation and disposal cost by eliminating the number of trucks and for transporting the solidified mud waste also needs to be considered;  as well as being in compliance with management regulations for liquid waste disposal.

Drill Mud Processing Station.Result:  Using HSALT, drill mud is typically solidified with an average reagent dosage of 1.5% (by weight) while eliminating any additional liquid waste treatments.  Likewise, you can also include that an estimated a number of hours of trucking, 100's to 1000's, will be eliminated as well.  If the treated solid meets requirements for beneficial reuse, you should also be able to prevent any unnecessary landfill and associated cost for unclean soil.

  • Structural nature of the polymer improves the cutting and carrying ability to keep drill holes clean.

  • Good compatibility with a wide mix of ingredients.

  • Simple on-site application, directly added or mixed with the slurry.
